Ocean Surface Displacement Map and Texture Generator
Linux - Windows XP - Mac OSX

SeaMonster is a simple to use command line tool for generating realistic ocean surfaces and ocean surface properties. The surface data is written to tiff or OpenEXR files, and can be used as ordinary displacement and bump map textures. The textures tile seamlessly, so with a single texture you can create an ocean surface that extends from one continent to another.

As a command line tool, it is run from any shell window on Linux, any shell window such as Terminal on Mac OSX, or the Command Prompt window in Windows XP. It also runs under Cygwin on Windows XP.

Developed by the computer graphics experts who pioneered this technology in feature film, SeaMonster is the culminating product that balances speed, power, flexibility, extensibility, realism, fidelity, and efficiency for building oceanscapes. The algorithms and technology behind SeaMonster have been used in many feature films and commercials. For example, the user can generate an ocean surface displacement map that looks like this:

Applying this displacement map to a surface, with appropriate rendering, an example of the imagery that is possible is this:

Seamonster helps you to simulate much more than just a displacement or bump map of the animating ocean surface. Additional channels of data can be generated and used to achieve effects of wave sharpening, splash and spray emission, and foam texture dynamics.

Channels

  • Height
  • Horizontal Displacement
  • Slope
  • Curvature
  • Cuspiness
  • Eigenvalues
  • Time derivatives of all of these.
